874,597. Punching. ETABLISSEMENTS SIRUGUE & CIE. Nov. 5, 1959, No. 37639/59. Class 83 (4). An automatic machine for punching angleirons W, I-sections &c., comprises a rollertable A, B, on each side of a punch-station 1, an intermittently-advanced work-carrier 27 on table B, feed-stops 34 for the carrier 27, and .means for locking the carrier during punching, releasing the punch 14 and causing the carrier to continue its feed after each punching operation. The punch or punches 14 in a verticallyadjustable head 8 are driven through a flywheel 12 and a one-revolution clutch 13 operated by an electromagnet 15. Adjustment of the head is by a screw 45, Fig. 4, rotated in a fixed nut 46a by a motor 42 and a worm gearing 43, 44, limit-switches (not shown) restricting travel of the head. Adjacent rolls 7, 22 of the entry and exit roller-tables A, B are skewed to carry the work against an adjustable guide-roll 18 or an opposed roll 19 if the work is fed back. The rolls of table B have a groove 21a to clear the lower, fixed jaw 31a of at least one workgripper 31 adjustable vertically on the carrier 27 and having a pivoted upper jaw 31b. Vertical rolls 28, Fig. 3, on the carrier run on a stop-table 25 and horizontal rolls on a rack 26 along which the carrier is traversed by a pinion driven by a motor 29. This may be a brake-motor or have a separate brake, and the carrier is further locked during punching by a dog (not shown) engaging a wheel in mesh with a pinion engaging the rack 26, locking being effected by an electromagnet. An adjustable indicator 33 is mounted on the carrier. Two rows of stops 34 may be provided, the stops being magnetic or keying in slots 25a, 25b in table 25 which has a scale for adjusting the stops. One row may operate a switch 35 on the carrier and controlling movement in the forward direction and the other a switch for movement in reverse. A pedestal switch-panel 36 carries on-off switches 37, 38, a forwardreverse switch 39 and a switch 40 for shortcircuiting the control by stops 34. Limit switches (not shown) restrict travel of the carrier 27. A switch 16 opens when clutchmagnet 15 is energized, preventing operation of motor 29 during the punching operation. Safety switches may also be included to prevent operation of motor 42 when motor 11 or 29 is running. Instead of stopping motor 29 during punching, it may drive through an electromagnetic clutch controlled by the feed-stops. An electric circuit for controlling the machine is described. In a modification having two or more punch slides 91, 92 each with at least one adjustable punch 95, 96 for punching the web or flange of an I-beam 102 guided between rolls 103, 104, Fig. 6, the slides are driven from a shaft 80 through reduction gearing and dogclutches controlled by electromagnets 83, 84. These are operated when the feed-stops 110a, 110b, respectively, come between the sources of light 106, 108, Fig. 7, and photo-electric cells 107, 109 on the carrier 105. The punches may be operated selectively by omitting one of the stops (Figs. 8 and 9, not shown). Several angle-irons may be punched simultaneously.
