Abstract
A composition for use in preparing laminates having an improved resistance to the effects of light contains an aminoplast and 2 : 4-di-hydroxybenzoyl-furan. The aminoplast may be: a urea-formaldehyde resin; a condensation product of formaldehyde and a compound such as dicyandiamide or melamine containing the grouping: <FORM:0874179/IV (a)/1> or a compound, such as cyanamide, easily converted to such compounds; methylol derivatives of melam, melem, ammeline, ammelide or halogen-substituted aminotriazines, such as 2-chloro-4; chloro-4 : 6-diamino-1 : 3 : 5-triazine; methylolguanamines; ternary condensation products obtained by reacting in any sequence (a) methylol compounds of amino-triazines or their ethers with low molecular-weight alcohols; (b) aliphatic alcohols, carboxylic acids, carboxylic acid amides or methylolamides containing a chain of at least seven carbon atoms, and (c) primary or secondary amines or tertiary alkanol-substituted amines; and condensation products of formaldehyde and guanyl-melamines, which may be made by treating dicyandiamide in an inert solvent in the hot with gaseous hydrogen halides, and separating the free amines from the salts by addition of strong alkalies. The Specification also refers to the use of salts of these condensation products with inorganic or organic acids, e.g. hydrochloric, sulphuric, formic, acetic, propionic and glycollic acids, and to urethane resins, sulphonamide resins and aniline resins.
