Abstract

874,144. Cellular polymers. SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ N.V. Dec. 15, 1959 [Dec. 17, 1958], No. 42582/59. Class 87(2). [Also in Group IV(a)] Expandable polymer beads of e.g. polystyrene, polymethyl methacrylate, are treated with a mixture of antimony oxide, a non- volatile halogenated hydrocarbon and a watersoluble or-swellable adhesive. Specified adhesives are methyl cellulose, polyvinyl alcohol, ethyl hydroxy ethyl- and sodium carboxy methyl-cellulose, ethylene oxide polymers and starch, whilst the halogenated hydrocarbons chlorinated paraffin wax and polyvinyl chloride. The treated beads can be pre-formed with steam at 98‹C. for 7 minutes, and then placed in a mould and steam heated under pressure whereby the contained volatiles cause the beads to expand, and the beads bond together to form a flame retardant cellular product.
