Abstract
Mono-olefins are polymerized in the liquid phase, in the presence of a catalyst prepared by adding an organo-metallic complex compound consisting of a metal of Group II(a) (except beryllium and magnesium) and an organometallic compound of a metal of Group II(b) (except mercury) to a halide or oxyhalide of a metal selected from Group IV(a), V(a), VI(a) and VII(a) of the Mendeleeff Periodic Table. The liquid phase may be a solvent or diluent or the monomer liquefied. The mono-olefin may be ethylene, propylene, or styrene. The organo-metallic complex may be Ba Zn(C2H5)4, Ca Zn(C2H5)4, Ca Cd(C2H5)4, Ba Zn(C3H7)4, Ba Zn(C6H5)4, Ca Zn(C3H7)4, Sr Zn(C2H5)4, Ca Zn(CH3)4, or Ca Zn(C6H5)4. The preferred halides and oxyhalides are of titanium, zirconium, vanadium, niobium, tantalum, chromium, molybdenum, tungsten, or manganese, and especially titanium tetrahalide, trichloride or dichloride, or vanadium oxychloride. The solvent or diluent may be n-hexane, n-heptane, benzene, toluene or xylene. Specifications 799,392 and 810,023 are referred to.ALSO:Organo-metallic complexes of the formula MaMbR4 where Ma is a metal of Group IIa of the Mendeleeff Periodic Table except beryllium and magnesium, Mb is a metal of Group IIb except mercury, and R is an alkyl or aryl radical, are made by adding a Group IIa metal to an organometallic compound of the Group IIb metal. In an example barium zinc tetraethyl (BaZn(C2H5)4) is made by adding small pieces of barium to a solution of diethyl zinc in benzene. Other complexes such as CaZn(C2H5)4, CaCd(C2H5)4, BaZn(C6H5)4, and CaZn(C3H7)4 may be made by similar methods. The organo-metallic complex may be used as a component of a polymerization catalyst.
