[Also in Group XXXVIII] In an apparatus for magnetically recording and playing back signals, especially high-frequency and television signals, in which a magnetic tape 14 is passed helically round a rotating cylinder 11 carrying a magnetic head 12, means responsive to the relative position of the head and the record on the tape controls the relative speed of the cylinder and tape. The track so formed is continuous but comprises in effect separate tracks 22 arranged obliquely across the tape, and it is necessary that these tracks be followed exactly by the head 12 when playing back. For this purpose, pulses produced in a detector head 26 by the tracks 22 passing it are compared with pulses produced in a further head 24 at each revolution of the cylinder 11 to produce a correction signal which is utilized, by means not shown, to vary the relative speed of the travel of the tape and the surface of the cylinder. Photo-electric means 21 is provided to overlie the gap between the convolutions of the tape on the cylinder and maintain the said gap in a predetermined position by controlling, by means not described, servomotors for adjusting the feed and guide rollers 16 and 17.
