Abstract

873,270. Aerials. LABGEAR Ltd. Aug. 18, 1959 [Aug. 26, 1958], No. 27347/58. Class 40(7) A wide-band aerial is designed to operate as a travelling-wave aerial for signals of a wavelength not greater than the length of either of the two members forming its radiating elements. These members are arranged in V formation and they are so dimensioned, and the angle between them so chosen, that when functioning in travelling- wave mode the characteristic impedance between their outer (spaced apart) ends is substantially that of free space. The members are supported, and a feeder connected to them, in an insulator at the apex of the V. In an embodiment intended for operation over a range of 40 to 220 megacycles/sec. travelling-wave operation in accordance with the invention takes place over the upper part of the frequency range. The angle between the members 1 is made 90 degrees and they are supported in an insulator 2 and extend to a length of 6 feet 2 inches. It is stated that the ratio between the length and diameter of the members should be of the order of 20:1 but in order to avoid the use of large diameter tubes it is preferred to use two half-inch tubes for each element. These are arranged fan-wise as shown with a maximum separation of thirteen inches. Shorting clamps 3 connect the tubes forming each member. The wide-band width given to the aerial when functioning in resonant or semi-resonant manner by the fan arranged elements is stated to enable signals to be handled from the frequency at which the aerial resonates as a half-wave dipole up to frequencies of travelling-wave operation. The aerial is substantially unidirectional in travelling-wave mode but requires a reflector to make it unidirectional in resonant mode. The reflector may either be a straight element or one constructed in similar manner to the aerial (Figs. 2 and 3, not shown).
