Abstract

An N-alkyl or N-aralkyl phenthiazine is prepared by reacting a corresponding N-alkali metal phenthiazine with an alkyl or aralkyl halide in the presence of tetrahydrofuran. The phenthiazine may be alkyl, aralkyl or hydroxy substituted, and the 9-sulphur atom may be oxygenated. The N-alkali metal phenthiazine may be prepared by reacting a phenthiazine with a dispersion of an alkali metal in a suitable solvent. Specifications 824,521 and 873,064 are referred to.ALSO:A mineral or synthetic lubricating oil composition contains as an antioxidant an N-alkyl or N-aralkyl phenthiazine prepared by reacting a corresponding N-alkali metal phenthiazine with an alkyl or aralkyl halide in the presence of tetrahydrofuran. The phenthiazine ring may be alkyl, aralkyl or hydroxy substituted, and the 9-sulphur atom may be oxgygenated. Synthetic lubricating oils mentioned are copolymers of alkylene glycols and alkylene oxides, organic esters, or those prepared by the processes of Specification 873,064.
