Abstract

872,636. Screw fasteners; stud and socket fasteners; bolting. ILLINOIS TOOL WORKS. Nov. 22, 1957, No. 36517/57. Classes 44 and 89(1). A quick-release fastener for connecting inner and outer apertured workpieces 32, 34 comprises a stud 60 having a cross pin 68 adjacent its entering end, an internally threaded receptacle 42 having an annular flange 102 at one end to be disposed adjacent to an undersurface of the inner workpiece 34, first and second attachment plates 98, 104 to retain the receptacle, and an externally threaded hollow locking means 44 to lie within the receptacle having a transversely elongated axially-extending aperture 136 through which the cross pin may pass, a locking surface 142 interrupted by the aperture and facing away from the workpieces, and an abutment 144 extending axially outwards from the locking surface, the cross pin being engageable with the locking surface for preventing withdrawal of the stud and at the same time with the abutment so that the locking means may be rotated upon rotation of the stud, and the locking means, or a portion of the locking means being split in a generally axial direction throughout its length and having an unstressed diameter greater than the internal diameter of the receptacle so that the split locking means or portion is resiliently compressed within the receptacle and its threads are substantially uniformly urged into locking engagement with the receptacle threads. As shown a pair of locking surfaces is provided such that after the cross pin 68 has been inserted through the aperture 136 of the locking member to engage the locking surfaces 140, 142 and thereafter rotated, opposite ends of the pin engage abutments 144, 146 by means of which further rotation of the stud causes axial movement of the locking member to draw the stud tightly against the workpieces. The stud is released by rotation in the reverse direction through about 90 degrees to allow the cross pin to pass through the aperture 136, and the stud to be ejected from the locking member by a spring 70. The upper part of the stud bears on a grommet 46, Figs. 12-18 (not shown) which is formed from a blank which is then deformed to provide grooves for a retaining washer 56. The receptacle 42 is loosely retained between the plates 98, 104 which are secured to the workpiece 34 by rivets 122, 124. A disc 171 limits the downward movement of the member 44. In another arrangement Figs. 5 to 8, (not shown), the locking member 44 is in two parts; an upper screwed part having a slot therethrough for the cross pin 68, and a lower split sleeve similar to the member 44. The locking surfaces 140, 142 and the abutments 144, 146 are provided on the upper screwed part and the lower sleeve is provided with lugs which extend between the abutments 144, 146 so that the two parts are interconnected for rotation as a unit. In a further similar arrangement, Figs. 9 to 11 (not shown) the grommet and spring are omitted. The upper screwed part is also split and includes additional notches for the cross pin to lock the latter against unauthorised rotation. According to Figs. 19, 20 (not shown) the disc 171 of Fig. 1 is replaced by a helical spring wire.
