Abstract

Uranium values are recovered from a magnesium or calcium fluoride slag (arising in the production of uranium from the uranium tetrafluoride) by treating the ground slag with nitric acid and feeding the resulting slurry to a packed, pulsed countercurrent extraction column, the slurry passing downwards as a film over the packing countercurrent to an upflowing organic solvent phase, such as tributyl phosphate or b b 1dibutoxydiethyl ether. An unpacked disengagement zone is provided beneath the packed zone and the interface between the two phases is in this disengagement zone.
