Abstract

871,582. Coated fabrics; laminates. DU PONT DE NEMOUR & CO., E.I. Aug. 8, 1958 [Aug. 21, 1957], No. 25605/58. Class 140. A heat resistant aromatic polyamide fabric the polymer being made up mainly of substantially wholly of units wherein Ar l and Ar 2 are the same or different aromatic radicals in which the chain-extending bonds are attached to non-adjacent carbon atoms in an aromatic ring, and having an inherent viscosity (as defined in the Specification) of at least 0.8 and a melting-point of at least 300‹ C. is coated with a cured copolymer containing 30 to 70% by weight of vinylidene fluoride and 70 to 30% by weight of polyhexafluoropropene. The base fabric may be woven or knitted or it may be an unwoven fabric or felt made from filaments or fibres of poly- (m-phenylene isophthalimide), poly-(4-methylm-phenylene isophthalimide), poly-(bis-4-phenylene) methane isophthalimide or poly-(mphenylene chloroisophthalimide). It may also contain other heat-resistant fibres such as polytetrafluoroethylene, glass, asbestos or metal fibres. The coating may contain curing agents, fillers, pigments, or plasticizers, and may be applied by calendering, doctor knife coating, dipping or extruding, or a preformed film of the coating may be laminated on to the base fabric.
