Abstract
A material for forming screens substantially opaque to ionizing radiations such as X-rays comprises a thermoplastic or thermosetting polymer resin incorporating at least 5% by weight or mercuric iodide and at least 5% by weight of the iodide of an alkali metal. When the resin is polymethyl methacrylate, the composition is transparent to light. Preferably the relative proportions of the two iodides are such as to produce the double salt 3HgI2,2XI, where X represents the alkali metal. In an example, mercuric iodide and potassium iodide are incorporated in methyl methacrylate which contains butyl phthalate as a plasticizer and azo-diiso-butyro nitrile as an accelerator; the mixture is polymerized in the usual way and formed into rods, sheets, or tubes.
