Abstract
870,705. Engine suffocators. BOEING AIRPLANE CO. Feb. 12, 1960 [Feb. 17, 1959], No. 5091/60. Class 47 [Also in Group XXVI] A fire protection mechanism for air-breathing jet propulsion engines includes a normally collapsed inflatable cell 1 in the air intake 91 and means to inflate the cell so as to block the intake. The cell 1 is in the hollow intake cone 2 and is inflated by inert gas from a cylinder 3 under control of cocks 30 (manual) and 34 (inertialimpact), when the cone 2 is jettisoned by the explosion of cartridges 21 under control of electric switches 23 (manual) and 24 (inertial). The fuel to the jet burners 96 may be switched off manually at 60 or inertially at 61. Valves 41 (manual) and 42 (inertial) may include pressure sensitive elements, which open the nozzles 4 and 40 when the cell 1 is fully inflated, so that excess inert gas in the tank 3 may be drawn by the compressor past the combustion chambers, thus quenching any incipient fires and cooling the engine.
