Abstract
The invention comprises silylarylene compounds having the formula: <FORM:0870024/IV (a)/1> where X is chlorine, bromine or hydroxyl, and polymers derived therefrom having the recurring unit: <FORM:0870024/IV (a)/2> A mixture of bis (p-dimethylchlorosilylphenyl) dimethyl and bis (p-dimethylbromosilylphenyl) dimethyl silanes is prepared by reacting dimethyl-dichlorosilane with dimethyl-di-(p-bromophenyl) silane in the presence of magnesium in ether. The product also probably contains the mixed bromochloro derivative. These silanes are hydrolysed with a saturated solution of sodium bicarbonate to the disilanol which is then hydrolysed with aqueous KOH to give a solid elastic polysiloxane. This polymer can be mixed with finely divided silica and benzoyl or other peroxide and heated to form a cured elastomer. The curing may be effected in situ on a base such as cloth or a copper conductor by applying a solution of the uncured mixture in a solvent such as benzene or toluene. The halosilanes may also be applied to such materials as masonry, textiles and paper, where they are hydrolysed by atmospheric moisture to give a water-repellent surface. The disilanols may be co-condensed with other siloxanes, e.g. methyl and phenyl cyclic tetrasiloxanes.ALSO:A copper core is provided with a heat-resisting polysiloxane insulating coating by passing it through a solution-dispersion of a polysiloxane (see below), filler and curing agent, in a solvent such as benzene or toluene, and heating to cure. The siloxane has the repeating unit <FORM:0870024/III/1> Suitable fillers are finely divided silicas, and the curing agents are peroxides. Water-repellent films of the siloxane may also be provided on solid bodies, e.g. masonry, by applying the corresponding halosilanes and allowing hydrolysis to occur by atmospheric moisture.
