Abstract

Easily digested and highly nutritive feeding stuff concentrates for animals comprise a suspension or a solution of citric acid, and/or one or more of its acid salts, in water or an aqueous liquid, e.g. milk, whey, skimmed milk, in such quantity, e.g. 5 to 20%, preferably 10%, concentration by weight, that the pH is between 3 and 6, and preferably so that the daily amount received by the animals, per kilogram of line weight, is from 0,01 to 0,5 grams of the acid. The concentrates suitably incorporate food materials such as soya and ground nuts, groats, linseed meal, fishmeal, oatmeal, bloodmeal, powdered whey, dried yeast, saccharin sweetening, together with minerals, e.g. salts of calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, and sodium, antibiotics, traces of elements, e.g. copper, manganese, zinc, cobalt, iron, fluorine, vitamins and, surface or submersion cultures of fungus growths, e.g. as obtained from the fermentation of citric, gluconic, fumaric, or lactic acid, in antibiotic preparation, or in the formation of citric acid when Aspergillus-niger pure cultures containing no spores are grown on molasses medium. Such surface cultures are preferably added in amounts of 2 to 20% on a dry weight basis of the concentrate to give a daily dosage of 5g to 200g per animal, and may be partially or completely biologically decomposed, e.g. using propionic acid and/or vitanium B12 forming compounds, and may be used as such, or in a dried and finely ground state; they may also be sterilized. Specification 9626/1915 is referred to.
