Abstract
Films and filaments &c. are produced from linear high molecular weight polymers, such as polypropylene, produced by a low-pressure catalytic process from olefines by mixing the polymer with 5% to 60% of its weight of an aliphatic, aromatic or hydroaromatic hydrocarbon or mixture of hydrocarbons which has a boiling point or boiling range between 100 DEG C. and 215 DEG C. and which dissolves the polymer at elevated temperatures but not at ordinary temperatures, maintaining the polymer-solvent mixture at 120 DEG -180 DEG C. until a gel is formed, extruding the gel to form rods, subjecting them to a further shaping process either immediately or after comminution at a temperature 10 DEG to 30 DEG C. higher than the gelling temperature, and then removing residual solvent from the film or filaments &c. The solvent may be an aromatic or hydroaromatic hydrocarbon substituted in the nucleus by one or more aliphatic hydrocarbon radicals having 1 to 4 carbon atoms. Alternatively it may be a petroleum spirit fraction having a boiling range between 100 DEG C. and 185 DEG C., or toluene, xylene, decalin or tetralin. In an example, a mixture of 70 parts of a lowpressure polyethylene having a molecular weight of 250,000 and 30 parts of xylene are gelled and extruded to form rods by means of a doublescrew extruder maintained at 125 DEG -160 DEG C. The rods are granulated after cooling and the granulated material extruded through an annular orifice by means of a single-screw extruder at temperatures maintained in successive sections of 140 DEG -170 DEG C. and 170 DEG -160 DEG C. to form tubes which are inflated to form tubular films. The process of the invention permits of the use of lower extrusion temperatures and consequently reduces decomposition of the polymer.
