Abstract

868,811. Time switches. McCORQUODALE & CO. Ltd. Oct. 21, 1958 [Oct. 23, 1957], No. 33137/57. Class 38 (5). A device which operates on a time basis to control a number of circuits automatically at predetermined intervals, comprises a row of helically grooved metal bobbins 15 mounted on a shaft 12 which is rotated in uprights 14 by an electric motor 11 and reduction gearing 13. Each bobbin controls a switch 19 by means of helical metal rods 37, whose lengths and positions in the bobbin groove may be varied to obtain any desired switching sequence, Fig. 4 (not shown). These rods engage an actuator 22 to close the contacts 21 of spring blades 20, which are secured to a bar 16 mounted on a bracket 29. Each end of this bracket has a lug 30 pivoted at 17, 18 to the uprights 14, the lug pivoted at 17 having an extension 31 connected by a spring 32 to an arm 25. Springs 33, 35 resiliently secure the bracket 29 to a cross-bar 34 and stops 36 engage the bracket ends. The arm 25 is pivoted at 26 and has a part-circular lead screw, which normally is coupled to a thread 24 on the shaft 12 by the pull of a spring 27, the pitch of the thread 24 being equal to that of the bobbin grooves. This coupling causes the shaft 12, upon rotation, to move to the right, this movement being permitted by slots 45 in the shaft and opposed by a spring 42. In operation the shaft 12 moves from its extreme left position to produce a desired switching sequence and on completion a disc 46 engages first a switch roller 47 to indicate such completion, and then a switch roller 48 to stop the motor 11, the shaft and bobbins stopping in the same angular position in which they started. A lever 28 on the arm 25 is now raised to rotate bracket 29 and lift switches 19, and allow spring 42 to return members 12, 15 to their starting position. The rods 37 may be soldered to the bobbins 15, or if sufficiently long, may form resilient clips sprung into the groove of the bobbin. If desired the rods 37 may form moving switch contacts which engage the conducting brush of a single stationary switch blade.
