Abstract

868,803. Tapping. ATELIERS J. HANREZ S. A. June 27, 1958 [Sept. 7, 1957], No. 20719/58. Class 83 (3). In a curved-shank nut &c. tapping machine .in which the tap 5 is rotated and fed and has a rearward extension rod 6 with a bent end for discharging tapped nuts by centrifugal force during withdrawal of the tap, the tap is fed to the work and withdrawn by means independent of the means for rotating the tap. As shown, the machine spindle 3, splined to a pulley 4 driven by an electric motor (not shown), rotates in an annular piston 9 operative to withdraw the tap, which is fed by gravity assisted by a spring 12 and/or electromagnetic force. Alternatively, the tap may be withdrawn electrically. The feedstroke is terminated by an adjustable abutment 25 on the holder which preferably opens a switch 26, thus de-energizing an electromagnet 29 which re-sets a valve to effect withdrawal of the tap. The valve, in a box 18, delivers pressure liquid from a pump 20 to cylinder 10 through a pipe 11. At the end of the withdrawal stroke an abutment 24 closes switch 26, re-setting the valve and allowing the liquid in cylinder 10 to return to a tank 22. A gating device 31 is reciprocated, in a shoot 16 between a hopper 17 and a guide 14 in which the nuts are tapped, by a double-acting piston 32 fed by a valve operated by an electromagnet 37 controlled by a switch which is operated by adjustable abutments 40, 41 moving with the piston. Flowadjusting valves 34a, 35a are located between the valve and piston 32, the operation of which is preferably synchronized with the movements of the tap. A switch 42 in series with switch 38 is arranged to be closed by abutment 24 when the tap is just clear of guide 14. Electromagnet 37 is immediately energized to change the setting of the gating valve and advance device 31, which is returned upon de-energization of the electromagnet by abutment 41 opening switch 38. Known means may stop rotation of the tap if a defective nut enters guide 14.
