Abstract
A method of rendering passive hydrogen-free fluorocarbon polymer surfaces more active towards adhesives comprises irradiating the surface with ultra-violet radiation of less than 2000 Angstrom wavelength in the presence of at least trace amounts of oxygen. Fluorocarbon polymers mentioned are polytetrafluoroethylene, tetrafluoroethylene/hexafluoropropylene copolymers, and polytrifluoromonochloroethylene. In examples polytetrafluoroethylene is irradiated under vacuum at a pressure of 0,05 mm. Hg. In one example powdered polytetrafluoroethylene is irradiated and then compounded with a heat-curing silicone rubber composition and heated at 400 DEG F. for over 100 hours. The product is soft, pliable and homogeneous when stretched.
