Abstract
868,146. Echo sounding; distance measuring apparatus. KELVIN & HUGHES Ltd. April 21, 1959 [April 23, 1958], No. 12966/58. Class 40(7). An apparatus used for ranging, as for example in radar, echo-sounding, or flaw detection systems, and in which only echo signals received from within a particular range are displayed, the time base of the display being triggered by an echo from the further limit of said range, comprises a recording medium moved recurrently relative to a record/reproduce head and an erase head, and includes means for switching the former head between its two conditions and for switching off the erase head during reproduction. As described with reference to fish detection the apparatus includes a rotating magnetic recording drum 19, a record/reproduce head 16 and an erase head 18. The transceiver unit 10 transmits pulses (a) which return as (b) in the form of transmitter break-through pulses 11, fish echoes 13 and bottom echoes 12. The break-through pulses are muted and signals (c) pass to the recording drum via units 14, 15 and 16. The bottom echo 12 is passed (d) by an amplitude gate 20 to trigger multivibrator 22. This gives a long negative pulse (e) whose negative going edge changes switch 15 to its reproduce condition and also switches off the erase and bias oscillator 17. The recording drum makes several revolutions during the negative pulse (e) and hence the reproduced signal is as at (f). This signal is fed to the display 29 and to an amplitude gate 31 which passes the bottom echoes (g). These trigger a second multivibrator 33 which in effect delays each reproduced bottom echo by a time t<SP>1</SP>, (h), the delayed pulses being used to trigger the display time-base 30 sweep waveform (i). In this manner the blank periods corresponding to the erased portion of the drum 19, which lies between heads 16 and 18, are not displayed. Repeated display of the recorded signals occurs until the positive going edge (e) returns switch 15 to the record condition and switches on oscillator 17 prior to the reception of the next bottom echo.
