Abstract
867,958. Sawing. BENDIX CORPORATION. Sept. 25, 1959 [Nov. 17, 1958], No. 32730/59. Class 145. Filter elements comprising ribbon wound to cylindrical form are cut into lengths by gauged saws 12 on a driven spindle 10 carried by pivoted arms 40 and the element is loosely mounted on a rod 20 loaded by springs 34 so that the element is pressed against rollers 24, 26 and rotated by them. The unset saws are rotated at 10,000 r.p.m. and the element is rotated in the same direction as the saws at a surface speed of about 3,000 inches per minute. The feed of the saws is controlled by a cam 50 which gives a slow initial feed until a groove is cut in the element and an increased speed thereafter. As the cut is completed, the cam kicks the arms 40 through a slotted member 54 and eccentricallymounted balance weights 44 are shifted so that the arms pivot to withdraw the saws ; at the same time, a slotted member 56 disengages the drive 52 to the cam 50.
