A magnetic recorder feeds a wide tape 13 along a helical path around fixed cylindrical guides, a fast-rotating head inside the guide transducing successive diagonal tracks on the tape. In Fig. 7, the guides 111 are of such diameter as to enclose spools 119 coaxially above and below a disc 108 carrying the head 109 and the tape feeding and guiding means. In an embodiment intended for recording television signals the tape is led outwardly around guides 83 to conventional spooling arrangements (Fig. 1, not shown). The usual sound and drive control tracks are recorded longitudinally on the tape margin. Balanced pneumatic pressures fed to the drum assembly, Fig. 2, and to the guides 83 cushion the tape and support it in contact with the head for transducing and out of contact during gast winding. In the Fig. 12 arrangement, limited overlap of successive turns of the tape eliminate the need for the usual erasure along the tape margin.
