Class 40(7) [Also in Group XIX] In echo-sounding apparatus having a release device for the periodic emission of sound pulses continuously adjustable relative to a recording member, the adjustment is effected by displacement of a gear part. In the apparatus described echo indication is given on a recorder and a cathode-ray oscilloscope (C.R.O.) both of which are adjustable relative to the instant of sound emission such that the partial zones over which they indicate are at the same or different positions of the total sounding zone. Graticule 3 over recording surface 1 is displaced vertically to follow the adjustment of the recorder partial zone identified by marks 4 and C.R. tube 2 shows the instantaneous recording to a larger scale. Recording member 41 rotates at constant speed and shaft 11, connected to the former's drive unit through gearing 9, 10, causes cam 5 to rotate at half member 41 speed thus affording one sound pulse emission per member 41 revolution via contacts 6 or 7. Lateral displacement of member 10 causes member 9 to rotate proportionally and the timing of the pulse emission relative to the entry of the recording member into its recording path is thus altered. Similarly the timing relative to pulse emission of the triggering of the C.R.O. time base, via contacts 18, 19, is adjustable by lateral displacement of gear part 15. Shaft 8 also carries a contact drum 21 on which are arranged five groups of metal ridges 22 for bridging contacts 23, 25. The springs of the contacts are displaceable relative to one another for adjustment of recording trace width and the whole contact assembly is displaceable in steps by a controlling groove on drum 27 for use when the echo trace moves off the recording surface. The zone-defining trace lines 4 are interrupted by gear 28, cam 30 and contacts 29 to reduce obscuration of recorded echoes. Correlation between graticule 3 and the recording is effected by wheel 40 mounted on a shaft carrying a rack to adjust member 10, Fig. 4 (not shown). In another embodiment a planetary gear system is used, Figs. 6 and 7 (not shown).
