The electrodes 1, 3 and separator 2 of a cell are perforated and held together by an insulated rivet 6 which also passes through stiff clamping plates 4, 5. The assembly is vacuumimpregnated with electrolyte and enclosed in a nickel-plated steel cup 8 having a cover 12. If the electrolyte consists of caustic alkali the surfaces of the container may be coated with magnesium, or the container may be made entirely of magnesium. A spring may be enclosed in the container to hold the electrodes in position, or the plate 4 may be formed as a spring to press against the electrode 3 and cover 12, as shown in Fig. 1. The electrodes may be of sintered nickel and contain a metal gauze reinforcement. They may be impregnated with solutions of nickel and cadmium salts and treated electrically in a hot bath of caustic potash. Contact between the electrodes and clamping-plates 4, 5 may be effected by spotwelding, and for this purpose the sintered metal is first consolidated by pressure to form a depression 15 at the point where welding is to be done.
