Abstract

867,350. Electric tests; capacitors. TURNER, D. W. Dec. 2, 1958 [Dec. 11, 1957], No. 38512/57. Class 37. Changes in dielectric constant caused by movement of a substance between two electrodes of a sensing capacitor is followed by causing the resulting change in capacitance to vary the impedance of a tuned circuit, of which the capacitance forms part, connected to, one grid of a multi-grid valve. The valve is maintained in oscillation by a reference tuned circuit connected to a second grid, and the resulting change in anode potential of the valve is measured and indicated. Detector cell.-The detector cell comprises a cylindrical brass body 1, Fig. 1, 2, containing two cylindrical passages 2, 3 in which are mounted brass rods 4, 5 supported by silicone rubber 0-rings 6, 7, thus forming two capacitors R and S. The capacitor R is normally filled with air and acts as a reference capacitor, the other, S, acts as a sensing capacitor and can have a stream of vapour from a gas-liquid chromatography column passed through it via the inlet 8 and the outlet 9. Measuring Circuit.-The measuring circuit shown in Fig. 3 comprises a multi-grid valve 10 having a reference tuned circuit comprising inductance 12 and capacitor R and a measuring tuned circuit comprising inductor 11 and capacitor S. The output from the anode of the valve 10 is fed on to one grid of a double triode 13, 14, the other grid being maintained at a fixed D.C. potential which can be set by the potentiometer 15. The cathode circuits of the two triodes are connected to a meter 16 which indicates changes in capacitance of S due to flow of gas through it.
