Abstract

867,342. Loud-speaker sets. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. Jan. 5, 1960 [Jan. 7, 1959], No. 634/59. Class 40 (4). In a one-to-one telephone intercommunication system using at one station a conventional cradle-type telephone set and at the other station a telephone instrument which comprises a carbon granule microphone and a loudspeaker mounted behind two apertures in the instrument housing, a spring restored plunger supported by the housing, has two electrical contacts connected to it for operating a calling circuit, and itself supports the microphone so that the carbon granules within the microphone are agitated upon operating the plunger. The housing 3 (Fig. 2), in the form of a short hollow cylinder is closed at the bottom by a plate 8 magnetically attached by a metal clip 10 to the permanent magnet 11 of the loud-speaker 2. The plunger button 6, mounted above and so as to cover the loud-speaker aperture 9 has a conical portion 16 which serves to deflect sound waves from the loud-speaker and is supported on a hollow cylindrical member 19 by three pillars 20. Lips 25, 26 on member 19 rest on a partly compressed coiled spring 24, which serves as the restoring device for plunger button 6, lip 26 also carrying a contact 4 and supporting a microphone 1. Another contact 5 is fixed to an insulated annular plate 22 which also carries electric terminals 27 (Fig. 3), for connecting two pairs of leads to the microphone and the loud-speaker, one of the wires in each pair going to a common terminal and to contact 4 and another wire going to fixed contact 5. The microphone and the loud-speaker are connected over separate two-wire circuits to the receiver and transmitter of the conventional set. A battery has one terminal connected to the common wire and the other terminal connected directly to the calling device and also to the transmitter and receiver of the conventional set by way of its cradle switch contacts. It is thus arranged that the calling device operates when contacts 4, 5 are brought together by plunger button 6 and that both two wire circuits are completed when the handset is raised, this operation also lighting a lamp 28 in the telephone instrument through a further calling circuit.
