Abstract

867,248. Batteries. ELECTRIC STORAGE BATTERY CO. Oct. 28, 1958, No. 34450/58. Drawings to Specification. Class 53. In order to prevent the evolution of hydrogen from the negative electrode of any cell that becomes overcharged in an alkaline battery having nickel and cadmium electrodes, a quantity of zinc oxide or hydroxide is dissolved in the electrolyte of each cell sufficient to deposit from 0.0001 to 0.001 gram of zinc on each square inch of the cadmium electrode. On charge the cadmium oxide on the negative electrode is reduced to metallic cadmium at about 1.3 volts. On overcharge hydrogen would be evolved at 1.55 volts but before this occurs zinc is deposited on the electrode at 1.5 volts, and the negative electrode acts temporarily as a zinc electrode from which hydrogen is evolved only when the voltage reaches 1.7. The charging current is therefore kept below this value.
