Abstract

867,147. Button testing. PFAFF A.G., G. M Nov. 12, 1958 [Nov. 16, 1957], No. 36442/58. Class 40(3) [Also in Group VII] In a mechanism for feeding buttons of the type having a different degree of light reflectivity in opposite faces, e.g. mother of pearl buttons, to a sewing machine, the buttons are passed through a photo-electric checking device which determines whether the buttons are right side uppermost and have the requisite number of holes. When a faulty or incorrectly positioned button is detected a reject mechanism is actuated which moves the button from the feed path into a second path, which incorporates a twist of 180 degrees, along which the button is moved before reinsertion in the feed path. Buttons 3 are fed in the direction of the arrow along a feed path 1, 2 to the button clamp of a sewing machine (not shown) and are tested at the button position next to the lowest by a photo-electric test device. In the device, Fig. 1, light from a source 5 is reflected by the button surface and is reorientated by a prism 7 and passed via the holes in the button to a photo-cell 9. The cell is connected in the grid circuit (Fig. 2, not shown) of one of a pair of triodes connected in a bridge circuit across which a polarized relay is connected. An incorrectly positioned button or one without the requisite number of holes reduces the light incident on the cell and the bridge unbalances to operate the relay in a direction which energizes the solenoid 91 and actuates the slide 102 which moves the button into the reversing path 101. If no button is present at the photo-electric check point, increased light passes to the cell via the mirror 110 and the bridge unbalances and operates the relay in the opposite direction which prevents the operation of the sewing machine start mechanism.
