Abstract

A heat-stable elastomer-forming composition comprises an essentially diorganopolysiloxane and from 0,001 to 8% by weight of the siloxane of a lanthanide rare earth metal (i.e. lanthanum, cerium, praeseodymium, neodymium, sarmarium, europium, terbium, dysprosium, holmium, erbium, thulium, ytterbium or lutemium) present as an oxide or hydroxide. The siloxanes used consist primarily of R2SiO units, may contain R3SiO 1/2 and SiO2 units, and preferably have a R/Si ratio of 1,98 : 1 to 2,01 : 1 and terminal Si-bonded hydroxyl, alkoxy, vinyl or acyl radicals or hydrogen atoms, R being alkyl, alkenyl, acyl, aralkyl, alkaryl or halogenated hydrocarbon. Fillers per se or modified with organosilyl groups, e.g. TiO2, Fe2O3, ZnO, asbestos and glass fibres, diatomaceous earth, crushed quartz and silica (fume, aerogel and precipitated) having a surface area greater than 50 m2/g, may be added. The compositions may be cured (i) by exposing them to X-rays, g -rays or to ultra-violet light, (ii) by heating with organic peroxides, e.g. benzoyl-, dichlorobenzoyl- and di-t-butyl-peroxides and t-butyl perbenzoate, or (iii) at room temperature, by mixing an acid-free diorganopolysiloxane and an organic silicate in the presence of a metal carboxylate, as disclosed in Specification 764,246, or in a modification by using a "Cellosolve" (Registered Trade Mark) silicate with the carboxylate, as disclosed in Specification 844,128; by mixing a hydroxylated diorganopolysiloxane with an organohydrogen siloxane as disclosed in Specification 804,199; or by exposing certain acyloxy-terminated diorganopolysiloxanes to moisture, as disclosed in Specification 862,576. Examples are given. Uses: for gaskets, caulking and tubing.
