Abstract

866,947. Thermally-actuated valves. SERCK RADIATORS Ltd. July 6, 1959 [July 7, 1958], No. 21650/58. Class 135. A thermally-actuated valve for automatically maintaining by means of a heat-exchanger a substantially constant temperature in the cooling water jacket of an I.C. engine comprises a valve body 2, Fig. 1, including a removable hollow insert 16 formed with four coaxial annular seatings 6, 7, 8, 9 engageable with valve closure elements 12, 13, 14 interconnected by an axial stem 15. Connections 3, 4, 5 connect the valve body to the jacket water, a by-pass in the circulating system and a heatexchanger respectively. The stem 15 abuts a thrust piece 23 of a thermostatic unit comprising a cylindrical cage formed by a pair of end-plates 20 interconnected by tie-rods 21 and capsules 22, 24 filled with wax or other expansible substance and urged apart by a spring 27. An adjustable stop 26 carried by the cover-plate 18 abuts the capsule 24 and a spring 19 opposing the expansion of the capsules abuts the closure element 14 and a closure cap 18a. When the jacket water is cold the valve elements 12, 13 are seated on the seatings 6, 7 so that water flows from the connection 3, through passages 10, 11 around the insert 16, the seatings 8, 9 to the by-pass outlet connection 4. When the jacket water begins to hot up the capsules 22, 24 expand leftwardly to unseat the valve elements 12, 13 from their seatings 6, 7 to divert some of the jacket water to the heatexchanger through the connection 5, and in the event of the jacket water reaching an upper limit of temperature, the valve elements 13, 14 close on the seatings 8, 9 so that all the jacket water passes through the heat-exchanger. In a modification, Fig. 2, the connection 4 is formed in the end of the valve body and the insert 16 is extended to receive a cap 18b against which the spring 19 abuts. The adjustable stop 26 is replaced by a member 28 axially movable by a screw 29 and carried by a sleeve 30 so that in the event of failure of the capsules the valve elements can be moved manually to pass all the jacket water through the heat-exchanger. In other modiifications, the water is returned from the heatexchanger to the valve body 2 through a further connection and thence through the by-pass connection 4.
