866,689. Preparing citrus fruit beverages. GROVES Ltd., O. R. Nov. 27, 1959 [Nov. 28, 1958], No. 38453/58. Class 14 (2). Apparatus for the preparation of a beverage from whole citrus fruit comprises a fruit comminuting means, a receptacle for comminuted fruit, liquid heating means, means for feeding liquid to the receptacle, means for agitating the mixture of comminuted fruit and heated liquid, and means for adding a relatively cold liquid to the heated liquid and comminuted fruit. Sugar, together with small quantities of citric acid and a colouring material, is inserted through a funnel 14 into a conical container 12 and a measured quantity of very hot water from an immersion-heated tank 16 is then added. An agitator (not shown) extending into the conical container 12 is then started and when the sugar has been completely dissolved, oranges are fed down a shoot 11; the fruit is rapidly comminuted and discharged into the hot, rotating sugar syrup by a cutting disc (not shown) located between funnels 13 and 14. A further, small quantity of hot water is then fed to funnel 13 to clean the cutting disc; finally a measured, large quantity of chilled water from a further tank 30 is added simultaneously with the opening of a valve 15 in the bottom of the container. The beverage so obtained passes through a removable strainer 36 into a refrigerated reservoir 37, from which it may be pumped by way of a cooler to a dispensing reservoir 40. Figs. 2 to 8 (not shown), depict beverage making apparatus in accordance with the invention intended to stand on a counter &c. The process of preparing the beverage is claimed in Specification 866,688.
