Abstract

866,283. Ironing-machines. DUNHILL, C. B. Jan. 23, 1959 [Oct. 25, 1957], No. 33435/57. Class 138 (2). In an ironing-machine comprising an electrically-driven roller 28 and an electricallyheated concave iron 9 with a table 29 spaced below the roller, arms 10 which support the iron at or near its ends are operated by a pedal 7 through a spring-loaded toggle linkage 15, 17, which is located below the table to allow unobstructed space between the roller and the table at the back and front. The toggle linkage extends in a horizontal direction between operative connections with the pedal at the front and with the support arms at the rear of the machine. The pedal 7 is detachably connected to a shaft 6 on frame 1 so as to swing from a front position to a rear position 7<SP>1</SP>, a tie-rod acting as a stop. Toggle links 15 connected to the ends of shaft 6 are pivoted at 16 to links 17 which are pivotally connected at 18 to a plunger 19 working in a cylinder 20 which is fixed to the lower end of arm 10. A compression spring 21 surrounding a rod 22 acts between the plunger and the rear end of the cylinder and an adjustable nut 24 limits the movement of the plunger out of the cylinder. A tension-spring 25 holds the arm 10 " in " or restores it to the " off " position when the toggle mechanism is in the broken condition. On straightening the toggle the iron is applied to the roller with a pressure dependent on the resistance of spring 21. If the toggle linkage passes beyond the dead centre position it remains locked until released by pedal 7, but it is automatically returned to the " off " position if the dead-centre position is not reached. The drive of the roller 28 is controlled by a projection on the shaft 6 which closes the circuit to an electric motor and a freewheel device is also included to allow hand movement of the roller. The legs 2 of the machine stand are detachable for ease of packing.
