866,202. Measuring dimensional changes. VYZKUMNY A ZKUSEBNI LETECKY USTAV. Sept. 13, 1957 [Sept. 20, 1956], No. 28918/57. Class 40 (1). An electromagnetic extensometer comprises coplanar connecting-members attached by strips to the material under test and also connected to the two ends of a ferromagnetic body so that extension of the material produces torsional stress in the body, means for applying an alternating magnetic field to the body and a pick-up circuit to detect deformation of the magnetic field. In Figs. 1 and 2 sockets 2 in the material are joined by strips 3 which are attached by members 1 to the ends of a tubular ferromagnetic body 4 in the manner shown in Fig. 2. The body is magnetized by the current in a toroidal winding 5 and in the absence of stress there is no pick-up in the coil 6, so that a voltmeter across the latter will measure the amount of torsional stress in the body and hence the extension of the material. The magnetizing and pick-up windings may be interchanged. By suitable modification of the construction the device can be used for measuring shear stresses in a material, and hence torsional strains. Applications of the device are mentioned, and in particular it may be used for measuring temperature if the expansions of the material and connecting-members are known and different. Alternatively the readings of extension can be corrected for temperature by using a comparison instrument. Specification 837,288 is referred to.
