865,596. Photo-electric aircraft guidance. BRAGA, M. A. P. DE A. April 26, 1957 [April 26, 1956], No. 13416/57. Class 40(3) Apparatus for facilitating the landing of aircraft comprises firstly an infra-red beacon on the runway and a photo-electric device on the aircraft which can be adjusted manually to assist in locating the line of descent, and secondly a mast on the runway carrying a series of vertically spaced infra-red lamps each modulated at a different frequency by shutters and a photoelectric cell on the aircraft which in combination with a frequency meter indicates the altitude of the aircraft. The photo-electric device for indicating line of descent comprises four photocells e and a concave mirror d axially movable within a tube c to maintain alignment between aircraft and beacon. The infra-red lamps of the altitude indication system may each be modulated in accordance with signals from a tape which are translated in the aircraft into audible statements of altitude.
