Abstract
Mineral granules having a well-bonded weather-resistant colour coating over the surface thereof are provided with a stable minute water-insoluble second coating formed from an oleophobic fluorocarbon sizing agent to render them oil stain resistant and capable of forming an adherent bond with a bituminous substrate. The granules may be coated with a pigment and binder solution, dried and fired to a tack-free abrasion-resistant state, treated while still hot with a dilute aqueous aluminium chloride solution to pickle and partially to cool them, and then coated with an oleophobic fluorocarbon sizing agent dilutely contained in an aqueous vehicle, the said vehicle being dried from the granule surfaces principally by residual heat remaining in the granules. Oleophobic fluorocarbon sizing agents are carbon compounds which are characterized by having in the molecule one or more highly fluorinated or perfluorinated terminal chains or side chains. Preferred compounds are the fluorocarbon monocarboxylic acids and certain derivatives thereof. These compounds can be employed in the form of the free acid, the metal or ammonium salts of the acid, or as polyvalent metal co-ordination complexes. Examples are given of the use as sizing agents of (1) N-methyl N-perfluorooctanesulphonyl glycine and (2) the chromium complex of perfluorooctanoic acid applied to coloured granules of syenite. The treated granules may be employed in the preparation of bituminous roll roofing and asphalt shingles, being applied as a layer or coating to the heated asphalt-impregnated and asphalt-coated fibrous base sheet material and pressed into place by means of rolls. The resistance of roofing materials prepared in this way to oil staining and to abrasion is compared with that of similar material which has not been treated with the fluorocarbon sizing agent.
