A selenium photo-electric cell is produced by immersing a hexagonal crystalline selenium layer in benzine or in a mixture of acetone and alcohol and then providing the resulting barrier layer with a counter electrode, for example of cadmium. The immersion may be for 15 minutes to 24 hours in benzine or from 10 minutes to 24 hours in a 10-80% mixture of acetone in alcohol.'
