Abstract
Synthetic anhydrite is obtained by grinding fluorspar so that not more than 1% remains on a 170 mesh screen (A.S.T.M. Fine Series Mesh), and reacting it with its molar equivalent of concentrated sulphuric acid at 150 DEG to 200 DEG C., the hydrogen fluoride obtained being passed into water to form hydrofluoric acid, and activating the anhydrite by adding to it material that gives it the property of setting when water is added to it (e.g. an alkali metal sulphate, lime or portland cement). The fluorspar and sulphuric acid may be continuously mixed in one chamber, where a part of the hydrogen fluoride is removed, and the reaction mixture continuously conveyed to a second chamber gas-sealed from the first chamber, where the remainder of the hydrogen fluoride is removed. The anhydrite obtained may be mixed with 3% of slaked lime or potassium sulphate. An example is given.
