Abstract
864,375. Friction clutches. SCHUTTE, A. H., COMMER, G., WELCKER, L., THEN, E., and PECHMANN, VON E. F., [trading as SCHUTTE, A. H., [Firm of]]. June 6, 1957 [June 22, 1956], No. 18044/57. Class 80 (2). [Also in Group XXII] A multi-spindle automatic lathe has workspindles 13, Fig. 3, arranged in an indexible drum 12 and normally driven from a central shaft 14 by gearing 15, 16, and dog-clutch parts 17, 18. When it is desired to stop one or more spindles the appropriate dog-clutch sleeves 18 are moved to the left to engage the clutch parts 35. After a slowing-down movement described below latches 20 engage recesses 21 in the sleeves 18 to stop the required spindles in predetermined positions. The transmission for slowing down and stopping the spindles is common to all the spindles and arranged centrally of the spindle drum in a casing 23, 24. A cylindrical extension of the casing 24 supports a control sleeve 25 which is moved to operate the spindle-stopping mechanism by one of a number of levers 26 which are arranged around the spindle drum intermediate the work spindles 13, Fig. 2. Each time the drum is indexed one of the levers passes within the operating portion of a cam 45 which, when one or more spindles is or are to be stopped, is moved axially by a cam drum 47 and lever 48. The control sleeve 25, Fig. 3, also moves a rod 30 which is connected to a sleeve 28 for operating levers 27 controlling a clutch 29. When the work-spindle in the desired stopping station has its dog clutch 18 moved to the left the normal spindle drive is disconnected and connection made to a slightly slower drive through casing 32 and gears 33, 34, controlled by clutch 29. Further movement of sleeve 25 operates a brake 39 to stop the rotation and then the end 40 of sleeve 28 engages a slip clutch to rotate the spindle at a very slow speed through planetary gears 42-44. Finally, the locking catch 20 engages a notch 21 in a fixed position of the clutch 18 to hold the spindle.
