Abstract

2-Ethyl-cis-crotonoylurea is prepared by dehydrohalogenation of 2-ethyl-2-bromobutyrylurea with an oxide of cadmium, calcium, copper or zinc at an elevated temperature. The process may be effected in an organic solvent such as isopropanol, ethanol or butanol, or alternatively the carbromal and the metallic oxide in a highly dispersed dry form, such as a powder, may be intimately contacted throughout the heating period, preferably at pressures below atmospheric. Examples, in one of which the lower melting transisomer is also isolated, are given, and the catalytic hydrogenation of the product to diethylacetylurea is also described. It is stated that the configurations of the cis and transisomers given in the parent Specification are incorrect.
