Abstract

863,105. Flexible hoses. TITEFLEX Inc. Oct. 14, 1958 [Oct. 31, 1957], No. 32840/58. Class 99(2). A flexible, reinforced plastic hose is made by wrapping a helix of the plastic and reinforcing material around a malleable and collapsible tube that provides a temporary inner layer of the hose, corrugating the inner layer, plastic and reinforcement simultaneously whilst holding them together during the corrugating step, heat treating the plastic while preventing collapse of the hose by means of the support afforded by the inner layer, and, after the heat treatment, crushing the inner layer and withdrawing that layer from the hose. As shown a strip 12 of aluminium or copper foil, one or more strips 15 of polytetrafluoroethylene and a strip 18 of woven fibre-glass fabric impregnated and covered with polytetrafluoroethylene are wound helically on to a rotatable or stationary, hollow mandrel 11, the strip 12 having the inner side thereof coated with polytetrafluoroethylene to facilitate stripping of the hose from the mandrel, and the convolutions of the tensioned strips overlapping. The hose is corrugated by a rotatable grooving worm 25 and nut 26 and the hose 28 passes between a fixed, inner compressing element, which retards axial and rotational movement of the hose, and a rotatable outer thread-forming element 32, both these elements rotating at a speed so as to cause the corrugations of the hose to be pressed close together and shaped by the element 32 as shown in Fig. 2. The hose is subjected to heat treatment, e.g. sintering by means of induction coils 35, 36, and a metal braid 40 is applied to the hose. To remove the inner layer of foil, the hose is passed between rollers to crush the foil so that the latter can be removed.
