Abstract

A herbicidal and algaecidal composition comprises a compound of general formula <FORM:0862857/VI/1> where X is hydrogen or NRR1, R is hydrogen or alkyl, R1 is alkyl and Y is hydrogen or methyl, together with a surface-active dispersing agent and/or a powdered solid carrier with or without the addition of a solvent. The solid carriers are mineral silicates such as talc, pyrophillite or clays. The active ingredient may also be dissolved in a hydrocarbon oil or chlorinated hydrocarbon oil and the oil solution dispersed in water by means of a cationic, anionic or non-ionic surface active agent (see Specification 693,912) or it may be in the aerosol or concentrate form. Specified active ingredients are 2 dimethylamino - 1,4 benzoquinone, 2,5 bis (dimethylamino) - 1,4 benzoquinone, 2,5 bis (monoethylamino) - 1,4 benzoquinone, 2,5 bis (diethylamino) - 1,4 benzoquinone, 2,5 bis (din - propylamino), - 1,4 benzoquinone, 2,5 bis (mono i - propylamino) - 1,4 benzoquinone, 2,5 bis (dimethylamino) - 3 methyl - 1,4 benzoquinone.
