Abstract

Agricultural soils are stabilized by treatment with a composition comprising 35 to 65% by weight of a hydratable dextran having a molecular weight or average molecular weight between 5,000 and 50,000 and 65 to 35% by weight of (1) a dextran having a molecular weight or average molecular weight of at least 100,000 or (2) a polymeric polyelectrolyte (for preparation see Group IV(a)). The composition may also comprise nitrogen-fixing bacteria of the genus Rhizobia. The dry, particulate composition may be applied directly to or incorporated in soil to various depths by harrowing, discing, rotary tilling or hand raking, and water may be applied to the soil to solve or swell the dextran. Alternatively, the composition may be applied to the soil in an aqueous spray. The composition may have small amounts of soluble salts of metals such as copper, zinc, manganese, or the trace elements added, and may be used as a mulch and spread over the plant location to be protected. The mulch may comprise other organic materials.
