Abstract
<PICT:0862488/IV (a)/1> In a method of continuously making polyvinyl alcohol from a polyvinyl ester (especially polyvinyl acetate) by base catalysed alcoholysis, a viscous alcoholic solution of the ester is introduced at 6 and flows from the adjustable annular orifice formed by the cap 9 and the lower part of the tube 5, in a cylindrical film 11. An aqueous or alcoholic solution of a strong base such as sodium hydroxide or sodium methylate is introduced at 4 and sprayed on to the inner surface of the film 11; the reacting film then falls on to the rapidly rotating disc 12 where it is further admixed and projected outwardly in the form of fine droplets towards the walls 14 of the reactor vessel, where it meets a downwardly flowing film of an additional liquid (which may be the recirculated by-product of the reaction) and flows into the slurry 17. The polyvinyl ester may be a solution of 20% by weight of polyvinyl acetate in methanol, or may be polyvinyl formate; the alcohol may be ethanol, propanol or the like. The base is suitably 23% by weight sodium hydroxide; or may be potassium hydroxide, potassium methylate or sodium methylate. Both catalyst and polymer are preheated to 35-90 DEG C. and about 0.15 mol. of basic catalyst per mol. of polymerized vinyl acetate can be used. The reactor is preferably heated by hot water circulating in the jacket 2 to 50-90 DEG C. The polyvinyl alcohol is formed as uniform small particles which may be recovered from the slurry 17 by filtration.
