Abstract

862,459. Making electric lamps. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. Nov. 25, 1959 [Dec. 1, 1958], No. 38662/58. Addition to 832,347. Class 39 (2). [Also in Group XXX] In a machine according to the parent Specification including a fixed gear wheel, a rotatable gear wheel on which a secondary member is movably mounted and a main support carrying the rotatable gear wheel and arranged to be rotated about the axis of the fixed gear wheel, the rotatable gear wheel being driven by the fixed gear wheel and being rotated on its own axis on rotation of the support about the axis of the fixed gear wheel so that the secondary member traces out an epicyclic path, actuating means are provided for displacing or rotating the secondary member with respect to the rotatable gear wheel during each revolution of the support. In the machine shown for transferring filaments 69, Fig. 3, from a support 21 which moves slowly or is indexed in steps to supports 22 on the periphery of a rotating table 42 of a filament mounting machine 51, the filaments are picked up by vacuum chucks 20, Fig. 1 carried by shafts 10 mounted in bearings in bowl-shaped member 3 mounted on a column 1 and having a set of gear teeth 40 on its outer surface driven by gearing 60, Fig. 3, which also rotates the filament mounting machine 51. Each shaft 10 carries a gear wheel 12 driven by gear wheel 16, adjacent pairs of which are driven by a gear wheel 15 itself driven by a fixed gear wheel 2 on the column 1 so that the chucks follow an epicyclic path 70. The chucks 20 are coupled to shafts 10 by a gear 28 on the chuck, an idler gear 71, and a gear 29 on the shaft 10, the gear ratios being chosen so that the chucks do not rotate in space as the bowl 3 revolves but are caused to turn through 90 degrees against the action of a spring 76 between the pick-up and release positions by means of a cam follower 74 engaging a cam plate 75. To avoid fouling of the arms 17 carrying the chucks in the vicinity of the pick-up position, the arms 10 carry two cam followers 44, 45 engaging cam plates 46, 47 so as to give the arms 10 an increased rotation on approaching the pick-up position and to allow them to return gradually to their original position under the action of a biasing spring 13.
