Abstract

A batch process for the preparation of swellable cross-linked copolymers of mono-ethylenically unsaturated compounds with from 0.01 to 2.0% by weight of a polyethylenically unsaturated compound comprises reacting the monomers in the presence of a polymerisation catalyst and in a medium consisting of at least 1/2 molar aqueous solution of a salt of an inorganic acid which is represented by one of the following formul : M++A-; M++A2-; and M2+A-, where M++ is a cation of a metal of Group I of the Periodic Table with the exception of copper and gold, A- is an anion derived from an acid exhibiting a basicity of 2, and A- is an anion derived from a monobasic acid. Monoethylenically unsaturated monomers listed include acrylic and methacrylic, and fumaric and maleic, acids, salts and derivatives thereof, styrene and substituted styrenes, vinyl ketones, esters and heterocyclic derivatives among others, and the poly-unsaturated monomers also listed include butadiene, isoprene and higher dienes, divinyl benzene and diallyl derivatives. Catalysts include benzoyl, acetyl and di-t-butyl peroxides, 2,21-azobisisobutyronitrile, potassium persulphate, cumene hydroperoxide, and tetraphenyl- and tetra-p-methoxyphenyl succinodinitrile, and the salts mentioned are those of barium, beryllium, cadmium, calcium, magnesium, strontium, zinc, sodium and potassium. Conventional suspending agents and protective colloids may be used with a reaction temperature from room to reflux and the product is in bead form. Examples describe the use of magnesium sulphate, magnesium and potassium sulphate, beryllium and calcium chlorides, and secondary sodium phosphate in the formation of copolymers of acrylic acid and divinyl benzene, 3,4-dihydroxy2,5 - dimethyl - 1,5 - hexadiene, 4,6 - dihydroxy-4,6 - dimethyl - 1,8 - nonadiene, 2,4,6,8 - tetramethyl - 4,6 - dihydroxy - 1,8 - nonadiene, 1,1,3,3, tetra-allyl - 1,3 - dihydroxypropane, p-diisopropenylbenzene; methacrylic acid and ethyl acrylate, acrylamide, methylenediethylmalonate, styrene, 2-methyl-5-vinylpyridine, N-vinyl pyrrolidone, N-vinyl phthalimide, N.N-dimethylacrylamide, 2 vinyl pyride with divinyl benzene; mixtures of diethyl fumarate and styrene, acrylamide and acrylic acid, methacrylic acid and styrene, acrylic acid and styrene, methylene diethyl malonate and diethyl fumarate or ethyl acrylate with divinyl benzene. The swellable resin products may be used as pharmaceuticals or intermediates. Specifications 707,647 and 714,750 are referred to.
