Abstract

861,902. Magnetic ink. INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORPORATION. Aug. 26, 1959 [Aug. 26, 1958], No. 29160/59. Class 146(3). [Also in Group XXXV] A magnetic ink is made by wetting a powdered magnetic carrier with a solution of a thermoplastic binding agent, adding the wetted material to a support medium in which the binding agent is insoluble, agitating the moisture to form spherical liquid droplets discretely maintained in the support medium and each comprising particles of magnetic carrier surrounded by said solution, and extending the solvent therefrom to cause solidification of the binding agent covering said particles to form substantially spherical coatings on said magnetic particles The magnetic carrier may be powdered iron, nickel, cobalt, iron oxide, ferrites or alloys of iron, nickel, cobalt or molybdenum; the binding agent may be an epoxide resin, an asphalt, a polyamide, polystyrene, a coumarone-indene resin or a petroleum hydrocarbon; the solvent may be n- or sec-butanol, or toluene; and the support medium may be a viscous aqueous solution of an organic material (e.g. glycerol, methyl cellulose, gelatin or agar agar) or an aqueous slurry of an inorganic material (e.g. calcium carbonate, talc or calcium silicate).
