Abstract

861,790. Portable hand lamps. UNITED STATES RADIUM CORPORATION. Feb. 20, 1958 [June 20, 1957], No. 5591/58. Classes 75 (2) and 75 (4). [Also in Group XL (a)] A portable hand lantern incorporates two, three or four light sources comprising- chambers filled with self-luminous tritium or krypton-85 exciting luminescent material. A lantern incorporating two light sources 25, 26 is shown in Fig. 7. Each light source is covered by a transparent plastic disc 27 heldby screws 28 passing into the body 1. The lantern, includes a cylindrical housing 29 having two planoconvex or Fresnel type lenses 30, 30a, a handle 33 and a supporting base 39. The two light sources 25, 26 are secured back-to-back and each is surrounded by a shielding lead ring 34, 34a disposed in a central opening through supporting rings 35, 35a locked together by bolts 36. A lead shielding disc 37 is located between the light sources 25 and 26. The resulting double unit is locked together by screws 38. Dense cerium or lead shielding glass can be used for the discs 8, 8a and lenses 30, 30a. Different, luminescent materials emitting differently coloured light with or without coloured .glass filters can be used. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 646,414.
