Abstract

861,159. Batteries. ACCUMULATORENFABRIK A.G. March 28, 1958, No. 10142/58. Class 53. A sealed counter E.M.F. cell, Fig. 1, is filled with oxygen at the time of sealing and comprises metal electrodes 6, 7 having no active material, and in which the electrolyte is absorbed in the separator 8 which need not be permeable to gas. Gases evolved when the cell is in use have access to spaces 11 and are absorbed by the exposed surfaces of the electrodes which are roughened or coated with nickel or made of sintered nickel. The casing consists of two metal parts 1, 2 separated by insulation 3. Between the electrodes and the casing are distance piece 4, 5 which may be made of insulating material or metal. In the latter case they help to absorb the gases and also make connection between the electrodes and the two parts of the casing which then form the cell terminals. The members 4, 5 are in the form of a framework having large interstices. In a modification the member 5 is omitted, the electrode 7 being in contact with the bottom of the cell. The cell may be constructed with the electrodes arranged vertically as shown in Fig. 2, and each electrode may be divided into two parts 20, 22 with a metal distance piece 26 between them. In other modifications some of the electrodes are of the normal single kind and some in two parts separated by metal distance pieces. Coiled electrodes may be made by superimposing flat sheets comprising electrodes which may be single or divided with separating metal members, and insulating sheets between electrodes of opposite polarity. The whole assembly is then wound into a coil. Specification 796,849 is referred to.
