Abstract
Clear, brittle, water-insoluble, thermoset resins are obtained by heating aminoalkyl carbamates of the formula <FORM:0861045/IV (a)/1> wherein R1 and R2 are hydrogen or C1-4 alkyl groups with the proviso that at least one of R1 and R2 is a C1-4 alkyl group and the sum of the carbon atoms in R1 and R2 does not exceed 4, with aldehydes such as formaldehyde, paraformaldehyde, trioxane, acetaldehyde, glyoxal, acrolein, crotonic aldehyde, benzaldehyde and furfural, in presence of an acid such as phosphoric acid. The resins may be cast as films on to glass slides and may be used to impart wet strength to paper and crease-resistance to cottons, in intumescent coatings and also to coagulate clay suspensions. Specification 861,044 is referred to.ALSO:The invention comprises compounds of the formula <FORM:0861045/IV (b)/1> wherein R1 and R2 are hydrogen or C1-4 alkyl groups with the proviso that at least one of R1 and R2 is C1-4 alkyl and the sum of the carbon atoms in R1 and R2 does not exceed 4. The compounds are prepared by gradual addition of an epoxide of the formula <FORM:0861045/IV (b)/2> to a reaction vessel containing liquefied urea, while maintaining a superatmospheric pressure of above 15 p.s.i.g. and a reaction temperature ranging from 80 DEG to 125 DEG C. for an aqueous medium and from 80 DEG to 150 DEG C. for an anhydrous medium. Alternatively, when an aqueous medium is used, the epoxide reactant may be added in bulk to the aqueous urea. The carbamates may be stabilized against decomposition by the addition of water, aldehydes and organic or inorganic acids. The products may be used for softening paper and cellulosic sponges, as plasticizers for phenol adhesives and as humectants. Resins are formed therefrom by condensation with aldehydes. Alkyl - 2 - oxazolidinones and monoalkanol ureas are formed as by-products. Specification 861,044 is referred to.ALSO:Coagulation and precipitation of clay particles is effected by admixing with clay suspensions the resins obtained by condensing aldehydes with aminoalkyl carbamates of the formula <FORM:0861045/III/1> wherein R1 and R2 are hydrogen or C1-4 alkyl groups with the proviso that at least one of R1 and R2 is a C1-4 alkyl group and the sum of the carbon atoms in R1 and R2 does not exceed 4. Specification 861,044 is referred to.
