Abstract
A fluorescent coating composition comprises a substantially colourless transparent varnish having incorporated therein minor proportions by weight of a compound which fluoresces red, a compound which fluoresces blue, and a compound which fluoresces yellow under U.V. light, the compounds being substantially colourless and transparent in dilute solutions by daylight and in such proportion to each other that the composition fluoresces white or blueish-white under U. V. light. The yellow fluorescent compound can be 3, 7-bis (phenyl-carbamylamino) dibenzothiophene-5,5 dioxide. The red fluorescent compound can be 2-(3-hydroxy-2-naphthyl) benzimidazole. The blue-fluorescent compound can be 4-methyl-7-di(lower alkyl such as methyl or ethyl) aminocoumarin. Approximately equal parts by weight of the compounds can be used. In an example one part by weight of the blue and red fluorescing compounds and one and two tenths parts by weight of the yellow fluorescing compound are used. The varnish comprises a resin and a solvent for the resin such as butylated melamine and a mixture of xylene and butanol, a maleic or fumaric acid-modified resin, and diethylene glycol, ethyl cellulose and xylene, long chain fatty acid-modified phthalic-glycerol alkyd resin and a hydrocarbon solvent, and a liquid drying oil-modified phthalic alkyd resin such as Aroplaz 1278. The amount of each fluorescent compound is about 0,-1%, preferably 0,1%, by weight of the coating composition.
