Abstract
859,426. Drilling. ENGLISH DRILLING EQUIPMENT CO. Ltd. July 29, 1959 [July 29, 1958], No. 24367/58. Class 83 (3). In earth and the like drilling-apparatus having a head f, Fig. 1, for rotating the drill mounted for feedmovement along a support c, the means for coupling the drill to the head f have limited axial movement relatively to the head to facilitate coupling or uncoupling of the head from each unit of the drillstring. The support c is carried on a main frame a secured between ceiling and ground levels of an underground working by jacks b. The support c, which consists of channel side members cl, is adjustable in height and inclination by means d, and carries, at its forward end, means k for clamping the drill whilst coupling or uncoupling. The head f comprises a cylindrical member p, Fig. 3, rotated, e.g. by a compressed-air motor g, through gearing, the cylinder having a screwed gland s with a hexagonal bore to guide a hexagonal rod t<1> with a head t slidable in the member p. The rocl t<1> is screwed at t<2> to a socket member j having drill-rod coupling threads v. A flush-water swivel u is provided. The free axial movement of the head t and rod t<1> renders the axial movement of the socket j during coupling and uncoupling independent of the main traversing movement of the head f, and facilitates the coupling and uncoupling operations. The clamping means k, Fig. 4, has opposed serrated grippers 6, 7 forced towards each other by hydraulic cylinders 8, 9, secured to a cross-beam 13 connected by links 14 to wedge-formations on the grippers. The gripper 6 has a concave-face to conform with the drillrod, but the gripper 7 may have a concave, convex or flat-form, and its gripping portion 7c hinged at 19 to the part 7a to prevent slip against the drill. If drilling is to be effected at an angle to the horizontal, a spring w is incorporated in the head f to balance the weight of the member j, swivel u and one drill-rod. Alternatively, the spring may be located behind the head t. Guide-rollers m for the drill may be mounted on the clamp k.
